Why Finalmed Works
Finalmed is an organisation dedicated to setting and maintaining the highest standards in Clinical Presenting throughout Medical Education and Training. Finalmed is a partnership of doctors from the UK and has been in existence since 2004.
Established by William Alazawi & Patrick Byrne, they believe that Medical Education should be founded not only on the acquisition and interpretation of large volumes of knowledge but on the ability to communicate clinical information accurately and concisely to effect good patient care.
Over 1000 medical students and doctors have registered for the Finalmed programmes and over 20 doctors have been trained to deliver the Finalmed techniques and skills in the same style ensuring an unambiguous learning message throughout our programmes.
Prestigious Venues
Finalmed has held courses in London, Cambridge, Birmingham and Nottingham, and has taught students from over 20 medical schools. Over the past two years, Finalmed ihas held courses in the UAE with students from the 4 main medical schools registering for our workshops on the recommendation of their own Deans and Professors.
Having established this method of learning we maintain the safe ‘Crucible of Learning’ atmosphere by limiting the course numbers to keep the Carousels group sizes as small as possible.
Proven Techniques
We have validated our teaching style with a questionnaire-based study the results of which are being prepared for publication in the medical literature. In summary, we have demonstrated that the Finalmed teaching programme significantly increases participant confidence and effectiveness by over 50% irrespective of the learner’s baseline confidence. Over 90% of respondents felt that the Finalmed programme should be integrated into mainstream medical education.
Proven Track Record
In the recent finals results from Dubai Medical College, students who had attended the Finalmed Weekend had a mean mark in Medicine & Surgery 7% higher than those who did not. Furthermore, 66% of students who attended Finalmed received medical and surgical grades ‘Excellent’ and ‘Very Good’ versus only 32% of students who did not attend.
International Recognition
At Finalmed, we believe in re-investing and contributing to the Medical learning environment. In the UK we run a National Prize for the best Medical Student and the best Junior Doctor Case Presentation. In December 2008, finalists presented their cases to a panel of Professors at The Royal Society of Medicine. In the UAE we are contributing to the medical student community by supporting and encouraging the activities of the Emirates Medical Student Society and our Course Director will be delivering the Keynote Speech at their upcoming conference in November 2009.
